The rifleman or titipounamu is New Zealand’s smallest bird weighing only 6 grams with an extremely short tail. Not the best flyers, they are seen in this painting doing what they love, hopping along tree trunks looking for invertebrates which make up most of their diet. They are very acrobatic and easily cling upside down on branches as the male is doing here while the female perches higher up the branch.
